Thrush: it’s smelly, it’s slimy, and it’s something almost every horse owner will come across at some point.

If you’ve ever picked up a hoof and been hit with a foul whiff followed by a dark, oozy discharge… yep, that’s probably thrush knocking at your stable door.

The good news is that when spotted early, it’s usually easy to get on top of with the right combination of care, products and a few simple changes to your horse’s routine.

What is thrush?

Thrush is a bacterial (or sometimes fungal) infection that usually starts off in the central sulcus of the frog – the groove running down the middle – and if left unchecked, it can spread out into the collateral sulci and the rest of the frog. In other words, it doesn’t just hang about politely in one spot.

The main troublemaker is Fusobacterium necrophorum. This anaerobic bacterium loves damp, low-oxygen environments – basically, your horse’s hooves when they’re wet and dirty. If it smells bad, looks black and gooey, and your horse is getting fidgety when you’re picking his feet out, chances are you’ve got a case of thrush.

In some cases, especially if it’s been going on a while, thrush can lead to pain or even lameness. That’s when it starts to dig deeper into the tissues and really cause problems – which is why early action is key.

What causes thrush?

We used to think thrush was only a problem for horses with poorly mucked-out stables or inconsistent hoof-picking routines, but research now shows it’s more complex than that.

Yes, poor hygiene and damp environments still absolutely contribute – but they’re not the only culprits. Horses kept on dry turnout and given regular hoof care can still get thrush. But why is that?

Let’s break it down:

  • Anaerobic bacteria like necrophorum thrive in low-oxygen conditions. Think wet bedding, deep mud or compacted sulci.
  • Lack of movement can also play a part. There’s a theory that movement helps the heels expand and contract, which naturally helps clear out debris from the frog. Horses on limited turnout or box rest may miss out on this.
  • Hoof shape and conformation matters too. Horses with narrow heels or particularly deep sulci are more prone, simply because there’s more space for bacteria to hide and less natural airflow to keep things dry.

In short, thrush is an opportunist. It’ll take advantage of any hoof that gives it the right conditions – so prevention is all about tipping the balance back in your favour.

Early signs and symptoms

Wondering if your horse might be developing thrush? Here are the early signs to look out for:

  • A distinctively bad smell when you pick up the hoof (once smelled, never forgotten)
  • Black or tarry discharge, often sitting deep in the frog grooves
  • Softening or breakdown of the frog tissue
  • Overgrowth or irregular frog texture
  • A reaction to pressure during hoof picking, even if subtle
  • Lameness, but usually only in more advanced cases when the infection has made its way into deeper tissues

Like most hoof issues, the earlier you spot it, the easier it is to get back on track. So, if something seems off – even just a weird smell – don’t ignore it.

 

Managing a case of thrush

In most cases, thrush doesn’t go away on its own. If you spot the signs, it’s time to make a few changes to help the hoof recover.

First things first: remove your horse from the environment that’s encouraging the bacteria. That might mean switching up your horse’s turnout routine, taking away all wet bedding daily or reducing time spent standing in mud.

Next, you’ll want to focus on cleaning the hooves daily and applying a targeted product. Look for something that:

  • Helps disinfect the area
  • Aids in drying out the infected tissue
  • Supports healthy regrowth without being overly harsh

Some traditional options can actually be too caustic, damaging the sensitive germinal tissue and delaying recovery. So steer clear of anything that burns or restricts airflow – remember, these bugs love low-oxygen conditions.

  • Regular trimming: A good farrier or podiatrist will help keep the frog balanced and shaped in a way that discourages bacterial hiding spots
  • Keep things dry: Whether it’s stabling or turnout, aim to minimise long hours in deep mud or wet bedding
  • Manage the environment: That could mean rotating turnout fields, improving shelter drainage or using gravel or mats in high-traffic areas
  • Routine check-ins: Get into the habit of taking a good look at your horse’s feet during your daily check

Thrush is one of those conditions where little things make a big difference – so keeping a consistent routine will go a long way towards prevention.
